40 YEARS "DIE SCHLUMPER"

The Victory Parade.

The Schlumper atelier was an extraordinary idea of the artist Rolf Laute (1940 – 2014). Part of the founding story of the group is that there are always unknown paintings waiting to be discovered. The story continues even today, as can be seen in this anniversary exhibition; all 32 of the current Schlumper artists are represented. 40 years ago, no one imagined that people with varying degrees of handicaps could have a chance to become artists – no one except Rolf Laute. After a mural project in Alsterdorf in 1980, he continued against all obstacles to work with some of the participants, and this is the origin of Die Schlumper. The name arose a few years later as the men and women continued to meet regularly to paint in a basement atelier on a street called Beim Schlump. By coincidence, but appropriately, Schlump is defined “an unexpected stroke of good luck” in a famous dictionary published by the Brothers Grimm. A brief glance back at the group’s history: with help from “Friends of Die Schlumper” (a sponsoring non-profit organization founded in 1985) and the Hamburg Ministry for Labor, Health, and Social Services, in 1993 a work project was created called “Schlumper by Profession”. Since 1995, a cooperative project has also existed in Altona between the Louise Schroeder School and Die Schlumper. To secure the future of the Schlumper work project, the sponsoring organization in 2002 transferred responsibility for the project to the Alsterdorf Evangelical Foundation and its workshops program, “alsterarbeit gGmbH”. The group’s current artistic director, Anna-Karoline Pongs-Laute, with a dozen assistants, continues the successful work of the atelier community. In 2014, the organization “Friends of Die Schlumper” established, together with the Hans Kauffmann Foundation, the “Galerie der Schlumper: a Forum for Art and Inclusion”. As part of the Schlumpers’ art pedagogy activities, group workshops are held in the gallery spaces. Die Schlumper celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2005 with a large exhibition in Hamburg’s Kunsthalle. The group, however, has become well known beyond Hamburg through exhibitions in Bonn, Berlin, Brussels, Chicago, San Gimignano, etc. The common denominator in the work of Die Schlumper – as can be seen in the catalogue prepared for this exhibition – is the rich variety of their visual expression. The 40-year history of Die Schlumper is itself a work of art.

SUNNY OR CLOUDY

The Weather in Art

And then there’s the weather! Some people are weather-sensitive; they moan about the wind and clouds, and are only happy when the sun comes out. Even when the forecast is wrong, the weather nonetheless is still everywhere. It is capricious. The weather shifts or it stays the same. The famous landscape painter William Turner (1775-1851) was one of the first artists to “discover” weather as a subject for art. For him, the weather – storm clouds, tempests, or fog – was a theme and symbol in itself. Great Britain was a rising global power in the period around 1800, and atmospheric conditions there (both literally and figuratively) were favorable for art. In order to keep sketching in the pouring rain, Turner always took his umbrella along. An English saying refers to it raining cats and dogs. His contemporaries regarded Turner as an odd, reclusive figure, but his art was widely popular (see Heinz Ohff, William Turner. Die Entdeckung des Wetters, 1987).

In the course of events, many artists have dealt with meteorological phenomena and attempted “to move beyond our clichéd images of the weather” (Antje Krause-Wahl, curator of the exhibition Vereinzelt Schauer [Isolated Showers] in the Frankfurt Kunstverein, 2013). Everyone talks about the weather – the Schlumper Gallery shows it. Die Schlumper artists and selected guests will exhibit pictures and objects dealing with the weather. The painted clouds by Martin Gertler fill the entire canvas. Can the magnificent clouds we see ever be touched? Michael Gerdsmann’s crocheted clouds can. In Stefanie Bubert’s works, the intertwining raindrops are made of string. The sun laughs with its whole face in Uwe Bender’s paintings. In short: Sunny or Cloudy: The Weather in Art. Weather is anything but harmless, according to author Katharina Hacker (2019), and the Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter (1805-1868) thought that so-called bad weather is always more exciting than the “good “sort (see Kursbuch 64, Das Wetter, 1981). Sudden changes in the weather or disasters like tornados, floods, and hail have been blamed on demons or witches. An eclipse of the sun is disturbing, but the stars in a clear night sky allow us a glimpse of infinity.
