DIE SCHLUMPER IN ST. JOHANNIS

Opening: Sunday, October 26, 10 a.m.
Church Service with Exhibition Opening

For the first time, artists from the shared studio collective will exhibit their work in St. Johannis Church, Harvestehude. In their diverse artworks, all participating artists have taken inspiration from the round form of the stone medallions found in the church’s interior.
The circular image format, also known as a tondo, holds a special place in art history. It was already popular during the Renaissance, appearing for example in Madonna paintings by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The circle was seen as a symbol of perfection, eternity, and heaven—a form without beginning or end.
This exhibition takes up that tradition in a unique and personal way. The round shape of the stone medallions is interpreted individually—sometimes as a window to the sky, a portrait, or a free, playful form. Thus, art-historical symbolism is combined with contemporary expression and each artist’s personal touch.
The exhibition will open during the church service with Pastor Andrea Busse. Afterwards, visitors are invited to join some of the artists for conversation over coffee, water, and pastries.

Participating artists:
Stefanie Bubert, Katharina Ellrich, Martin Gertler, Miriam Hosner, Bernhard Krebs, Benjamin Langner, Silke Marohn, Rabka Mehr, Thorsten Raab, Nicole Schmuhl, Birte Seidensticker, Frank Steiner, Horst Wäßle, Brigitte Wolter, u.a.

Opening Hours:

ATELIER DE LA TOUR X DIE SCHLUMPER

Opening: Friday 17 October, 19.00

This autumn and winter, guests from Austria will be featured at the Galerie der Schlumper.
Artists from Atelier de La Tour will travel to Hamburg to present their works alongside pieces from the Atelier der Schlumper.
The origins of Atelier de La Tour date back 40 years, just like the Atelier der Schlumper. It is one of the oldest studios in Austria where people with disabilities and artistic talent pursue their own creative work on a full-time basis.
The artists will spend a few days in Hamburg and also visit the Atelier der Schlumper. This visit and artistic exchange across national borders can inspire new impulses and ideas, and we hope to enable a return visit to Klagenfurt next year.

On display will be prints, drawings, and objects.

E&U

A Group Exhibition by Galerie Kremers and Galerie ART CRU Berlin

Under the title E & U, Galerie Kremers and Galerie ART CRU Berlin present their first joint exhibition project. In this special collaboration, international artistic positions (from Canada, the USA, and Europe) from the established art world (“E”) and from Outsider Art (“U”) come together—deliberately without hierarchy, but with ample space for new perspectives. The title playfully refers to the German distinction between E-Musik (serious music) and U-Musik (popular music), transferring it to the visual arts in order to question artistic categories and value systems.

At both venues, works by artists from both institutions will be shown—sometimes side by side, sometimes in dialogue, sometimes in contrast.
In September 2026, E & U will go on tour: Galerie GLI ACROBATI in Turin, where the curators first met the artist Fabrizio Molinario, will present its own version of the exhibition featuring a selection of the participating artists.

The exhibition presents 38 international artists—from completely undiscovered positions to Picasso, among others.

From Atelier der Schlumper, artist Horst Wäßle will be part of the exhibition.

GOLD & KLEISTER /GOLD & PASTE

Opening: Friday 25 July, 19.00

This summer, the Schlumper Gallery presents a group exhibition by artists from the studio collective Die Schlumper, titled: "Gold & Kleister" (Gold & Paste)

The phrase was coined by artist Katharina Ellrich and originally came from a materials order. Symbolically, it also says a lot about the working methods of some of the artists in the studio.

No distinctions are made here — a found piece of cardboard can be just as valuable as high-quality handmade paper.

The exhibition “Gold & Kleister” invites visitors to reflect on the value and impact of materials. The mix of materials creates tension — and opens up new perspectives on aesthetics, artistic significance, and meaning.

“Gold & Paste” plays with contrasts and raises questions: What is valuable? What gives things meaning? And how do materials change the way we perceive art?

We look forward to your visit!

The following artists are participating in the exhibition:

Magid Ajjane, Stefanie Bubert, Johannes Dechau, Katharina Ellrich, Senem Gürüz, Miriam Hosner, Karl-Ulrich Iden, Silke Marohn, Dominik Nichtern, Nicole Schmuhl, Frank Steiner, Horst Wäßle, u.a.

ES REGNET MENSCHEN / IT’S RAINING PEOPLE

MARTIN GERTLER & MALTE KAISER

Opening: Friday 9 May, 2025, 19.00

The Schlumper Gallery cordially invites you to the exhibition "It's Raining People" – an exciting joint show by artists Martin Gertler and Malte Kaiser, both long-standing members of the Schlumper studio community.

Despite stylistic differences, the works of both artists are united by close attention to detail and a shared fascination with figurative elements. In his latest works, Martin Gertler reduces the human figure to clear, schematic forms – whole clusters of people fall from the sky like raindrops and populate the picture in rhythmic rows.

Malte Kaiser, on the other hand, develops dense, ornamental compositions with abstracted images of human heads, which he also condenses into haunting individual portraits.

"It's Raining People" invites you to a multi-layered examination of the human image – between pattern, individual, and group.

We look forward to your visit!

SCHICHT FÜR SCHICHT /LAYER BY LAYER

Vernissage: Thursday, 06 Februar 2025 at 19.00

“Those who go beneath the surface, do so at their peril.” These often-quoted words by Oscar Wilde are a warning, but also a challenge to look behind the scenes, to stare into the depths, to pull aside the curtains and remove the masks. What can be found there? Beauty? Chaos? The unvarnished truth? A wolf in sheep’s clothing,  a buried treasure, or perhaps a long-hidden secret?

Visitors to this exhibition can look forward to discovering and deciphering a fascinatingly cryptic and multi-layered collection of paintings, photographs, objects and installations.

To explore this complex topic, Die Schlumper have invited two guest artists to contribute to the exhibition: the renowned Spanish photographer David Gómez Maestre, who composes striking images of ritual celebrations in various regions of Spain; and Addas Ahmad from Berlin, who will present some of his fanciful mask objects.

The following artists are participating in the exhibition: Addas Ahmad (Berlin), Mawuena Ahadzie, Magid Ajjane, Uwe Bender, Katharina Ellrich, David Gómez Maestre (Alicante), Tongtad Mahasuwan, Miriam Hosner, Janika Roth, Horst Wäßle, Klara Zwick, among others.

Opening hours:

Wed. – Fri. 16.00 – 19.00

Sat. 11.00 – 17.00

Sun. 14.00 – 17.00

The gallery will be closed on Good Friday (18.04.25) and Easter Sunday (20.04.25).
