DIE SCHLUMPER IN ST. JOHANNIS
Opening: Sunday, October 26, 10 a.m.
Church Service with Exhibition Opening
For the first time, artists from the shared studio collective will exhibit their work in St. Johannis Church, Harvestehude. In their diverse artworks, all participating artists have taken inspiration from the round form of the stone medallions found in the church’s interior.
The circular image format, also known as a tondo, holds a special place in art history. It was already popular during the Renaissance, appearing for example in Madonna paintings by Botticelli, Michelangelo, and Raphael. The circle was seen as a symbol of perfection, eternity, and heaven—a form without beginning or end.
This exhibition takes up that tradition in a unique and personal way. The round shape of the stone medallions is interpreted individually—sometimes as a window to the sky, a portrait, or a free, playful form. Thus, art-historical symbolism is combined with contemporary expression and each artist’s personal touch.
The exhibition will open during the church service with Pastor Andrea Busse. Afterwards, visitors are invited to join some of the artists for conversation over coffee, water, and pastries.
