This spring, the birds are returning not only to our city, but also to our gallery.
Benjamin Langner and Ulla Diedrichsen, both of whom have devoted many years to the depiction of animals, especially the colorful world of birds, present a selection of magnificent, archaic looking creatures. Their ancestry according to modern biological taxonomy, birds are a subgroup of theropod dinosaurs, is strikingly illustrated in the works on view.
Flamingos engaged in courtship, parrots, and peacocks populate the walls, each attempting to outshine the others in their dazzling display of color.
Large-scale, expressive paintings by Benjamin Langner are shown alongside wax crayon drawings by Ulla Diedrichsen, whose expressive power is in no way inferior to the paintings.
The exhibition is complemented by a small installation by Benjamin Binder.
Ulla Dietrichsen
Born in 1947 in Hamburg, lives and works in Hamburg.
Since 1993, Ulla Dietrichsen has attended the Schlumper studio in her free time. From 1998 to 2020, she was a permanent member of the Schlumper studio community.
Dietrichsen primarily works with wax crayon; her drawings are bold and colorful. Frequent subjects of her work are animals and the people in her surroundings, whom she particularly enjoys portraying.
Benjamin Langner
Born in 1982 in Hamburg, lives and works in Hamburg.
Since 2005, Benjamin Langner has been a member of the Schlumper studio community in Hamburg.
In his early years at the studio, Langner mainly focused on drawing, combining his own figurative inventions with areas of color in sometimes highly detailed works. In recent years, he has increasingly engaged with painting. Notable among these are his large-scale depictions of animals, which he reduces to the essentials and executes with spontaneity on paper.
Benjamin Binder
Born in 1989 in Brașov, Romania, lives and works in Hamburg.
Even during his school years, Benjamin Binder completed an internship at the Schlumper studio in Hamburg. Since 2008, he has been a permanent member of the studio community and works there daily.
In recent years, the theme of “snails as companions” has taken on an increasingly central role in Binder’s work. The mostly crocheted snails are brought to life by him. With the help of motors or small loudspeakers, they become living beings that accompany him through his everyday life.
